How is PRF different from PRP?
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) is another type of blood product created from a patient’s blood. The difference comes down to the ingredients, ratio of ingredients, and how the products are created. PRF is, like PRP, created by spinning the patient’s blood in a centrifuge. With PRF, the centrifuge is spun at a lower speed, allowing for more cells and growth factors to be collected and harvested.
PRF is also different from PRP in that it is a 100% natural product, while PRP contains additives like anti-coagulants. Without these additives, PRF allows fibrin scaffolding to naturally develop and gradually release contained growth factors into your skin. The fact that PRF results in a gradual release of growth factors leads to longer-lasting results.
What can I expect during my PRF microneedling treatment?
Your provider will draw a small amount of blood from you, which will be spun in a slow-speed centrifuge, separating out red blood cells. This PRF blood product will then be used during your microneedling treatment.
Your provider will likely apply a numbing cream to the area of treatment before you undergo your PRF microneedling treatment. After your skin is completely numb, they will move the microneedling device over your skin in a series of sweeps and combine the treatment with the application of the PRF blood product.
PRF will work with your own body to restore and rejuvenate your skin over time. It may take a few weeks or months to see the full results of your PRF microneedling treatment. Most patients benefit from multiple treatment sessions spaced a week or more apart.
